Thank you, friends, for watching and working for North Dakota Today. It was a drizzly day to talk about Nancy Klatt, my Nice Person of the Week, as well a free event to spend a little time in the dark.
A little bit more about Quilts on the Red (which, by the way, is October 17 in Grand Forks) from Nancy:
What would a first-time attendee need to know?
First time attendees will see lots of beautiful quilts and many different types from traditional to modern, holiday themed and quilts made by young quilters. We also have some special exhibits. We have done a challenge with the Grand Forks Watercolor Society- this will be our 5th pairing with the two groups making pieces inspired by each other. This year’s theme is ‘Seasons’. 24 pairings of original watercolors and quilt projects will be shown.
The second challenge is the ‘Upcycle Challenge’ where participants created a piece featuring previously used fabrics or other recyclables. Members have come up with lots of fun ways to meet this challenge.
We also have quilt-related vendors, many are quilt shops from around the region, so lots of fun items to look at and shop! There is also Basket Raffle and Raffle Quilt.
How many entries are you expecting?
We plan for about 220 quilts, many are judged but we have increased the number of non-judged quilts so members of all abilities can feel comfortable entering their work. How long have you been hosting the show?
What has surprised you about the Quilts on the Red Show?
I would say the biggest surprise was the number of people we had attending the quilt show in 2023. The show was one week later than this year but still in October. We had an ice/snowstorm hit our area on the Thursday before the show. Some of our vendors almost didn’t make it, the roads were horrible. Despite the terrible conditions, we had a wonderful turn out. We had one quilter who ran in the ditch on her way, got pulled out and kept on to the Quilt show! Quilters are pretty dedicated/passionate about their craft!
Can anyone join the Guild or the Show?
Yes! Anyone can join the Guild, we will have membership information at the show or they can go online at www.northstarquilters.org. Anyone is welcome to attend the show and lectures. We would love to have them come!
Is there anything else you want to tell me?
We have some great speakers lined up for the show. Lynette Mart is from South Dakota and will be judging quilts for the show, and also doing two lectures: ”Easy t-shirt quilts” and “The Language of a Longarm Quilter”. Jolene Mikkelson, who is one of our members will be doing a lecture on “Creation of a Hospital in a Garden”. Jolene made a quilt that is 8 ½ ft by 11 ft that is a depiction of the new Altru Hospital. It is displayed in the hospital. Clem Buzick who has won National Awards for her quilting will be giving a lecture “Get-er-Done” and Amy Munson from Bismarck is a art historian will be lecturing on “My Art Journey”
