“Stuff that makes you say, “Oh, for nice”

North Dakota Today | Rose Ryckman and Young Composers Camp

Thank you, friends, for watching and working for North Dakota Today. It was a lovely day – it’s “National Look Up at the Sky” Day! – to talk about Rose Ryckman, my Nice Person of the Week, as well as a camp for budding composers.

As promised, here are few additional items of note on the Young Composers Camp from Emily Driscoll:

I’d love everyone to know this about the faculty of the Young Composers Camp (Ann DeLorme-Holmen, David Sorenson, Dr. Troy Toavs, and myself) – we are committed to keeping the experience fun, inclusive, and informative! We are all very different, and we consider that to be a strength. My background is in Film and Audiobook/Radio Theater Scoring, whereas David’s background is more in the academic and collegiate world. Troy’s specialty is in music education and younger students, and Ann has thirty-plus years’ experience in piano pedagogy! Also, every year is a little bit different, presenting new challenges and new ideas. Because we all have very different approaches to composition as individuals, its fun to get to know each student on a personal level and discover which students naturally work best with us!

If there are any composers who’d be interested in coming for a day to put on a mini-workshop for our students or just give a talk about composition, we’d love to have them! Lastly, its important to me that I mention we are sponsored by the Williston Thursday Musical, a local group dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the art of performance. We recently celebrated the one hundredth anniversary of our club! We couldn’t host this camp without their support, financial and otherwise. They are a blessing to our community! Every year, they give out scholarships to over a dozen local and regional students so they can attend music camps like ours and the International Music Camp as well.
