If you have not yet been to a state fort or historic site in North Dakota DROP WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND GET OUT THERE because they are awesome. Why are they awesome? Um, do you like learning about history, spending time in the beautiful outdoors, and meeting interesting people? Of course you do. And, when those state sites host an actual event, my advice would be to RUN, not walk out there.
The Fort Abercrombie State Historic Site will be hosting its annual Living History Weekend in Abercrombie, North Dakota (Abercrombie is 35 miles south of Fargo) on August 1-3, 2025. Experience North Dakota in 1865 – take the sights, sounds, and smells of a frontier fort with reenactors and living historians, and learn about the lives of a unique set of soldiers stationed in the melting pot of Dakota Territory as the Civil War came to a close. Kyle and I have been to this fort for this event and you’re going to want to plan to spend some time (don’t go out there thinking you’ll only watch one reenactment and leave). I’d also recommend packing snacks and water.
While you are there, make it a weekend and check out Aber Days. The schedule is below.

Have fun!
