Not exactly nice, but interesting enough – North and South Dakota were originally expected to form one state – Dakota, with its capital in Yankton – after the Dakota Territory was officially incorporated in the mid 1800’s. However, the two halves of the Territory didn’t particularly like one another, and so the Territory was split upon statehood.
